Moderna 与 Merck 个体化 mRNA 癌症疫苗 3 期试验降低 42% 复发风险
This mRNA vaccine works on exactly one person on Earth, because AI designed it from their tumor. The algorithm scans the tumor’s DNA and picks out up to 34 mutations that only that person’s cancer cells carry, then those get written into the vaccine. Their immune system learns those 34 targets so their T cells know exactly what to hunt. In a Phase 3 trial of 1,137 melanoma patients, Moderna and Merck’s personalized vaccine plus Keytruda cut the risk of the cancer coming back by 42%. It isn’t a cure, and survival data isn’t in yet, but it’s the first personalized cancer therapy ever to pass Phase 3. 🧬 Sources: ESMO 2026, LBA1 (INTerpath-001) · Merck/Moderna press release, Oct 22, 2026 · Accepted at the New England Journal of Medicine

This past week, moderna and merck presented the results of a cancer vaccine that was built for one patient at a time, and it's working.
Ok, so this was for a phase 3 trial with over 1,100 people who have had melanoma surgically removed. The ones who got the vaccine on top of the standard immunotherapy had a 42 percent lower risk of the cancer coming back.
Ok, so it brings up a question. Why is it so individualized? Because first of all, every tumor is its own pile of mutations.
The team takes your tumor out, sequences it, and picks out up to 34 mutations that only your cancer cells carry. Then, they write those 34 into an mrna message and inject it.
Your immune system reads the message and learns what those mutations look like, so your own t cells know what to go and find.
So essentially, two patients with the same disease would get two completely different vaccines. Now, this lowers the chance of cancer coming back.
It isn't a cure. Let's be clear about that. And the survival data isn't there yet. This is still very new. But it really is the first personalized cancer therapy to ever pass a phase three trial.
And the really exciting thing is they're already testing it in lung, bladder, and kidney cancer. So I think there are two main questions here now.
One is, it's no longer if this works, it's how fast can we. Make it for cancer patients. And the other question, to be honest with you, i have on my mind is what is the cost with these treatments?
What will that look like, and how accessible will it be for everyone who needs it? Share this with someone who loves biotech.
