I had to leave my PhD program over false AI usage accusations. And forgive me, I'm just recording this natively in the app because I feel like if I don't do it now, I'm just never going to do it.

But I left my PhD program because one random day with no warning. With my advisor who had a long sustained professional relationship with in a zoom meeting conjectured that i used an llm to write my most recent paper and that's why it was being rejected.

And i have the three rejections. I think i'm gonna put them in here. So one was because formatting issue and the other two were because the paper was out of scope.

So my advisor raised this accusation without any evidence. And there was no witnesses, no reports, they told me that they could no longer afford to have my name attached to them, and ended our advising relationship effective immediately, and none of this was communicated to my department or brought up the chain.

It was just done unilaterally. I cannot emphasize how little warning, you know, just a few weeks, months earlier, weeks earlier, the same paper, my advisor had sent me emails saying that it was outstanding, and that i was doing great work, and everything seemed.

You know, completely where it should be. And so yeah, nobody knew about this. I was just, i was going into my sixth year of my phd.

I was supposed to be having my doctor. I had a postdoc essentially lined up ready to go. I was supposed to have had my doctorate in july or august.

So i heard nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing was ever put on record. Like i said, no witnesses, super weird, super jarring.

And the only email i got was a email from my admin saying that my funding is going to be cut off. and that's it, and so six weeks later.

I ended up filing a grievance because these things, if you know anything about, you know, university policy is that you have to usually follow some sort of.

Procedural due process where you, you know, raise a disciplinary concern or an honor code violation concern, and it's brought through a hearing committee, and it's verified at multiple levels of university administration.

So, like i said, it was just radio silence. So, i was just kind of floating in space. And so, at my university, you can submit a grievance.

Based upon a policy violation that you can point to. And so i submitted a very thorough document. I combed through all of my communications with my advisor in my department since 2024 wrote it all out in a very precise clear timeline.

And put it in a grievance report. I followed all of the particular instructions that comprised a grievance submission for my university.

I've been in communications with my union and grievance. Committee members at my university. And so i put the document together, i put it in the right form.

I had multiple people review it and then i sent it to the appropriate. Bodies. Also, i not heard from my department at all at this point.

This was six weeks later. I think what's important to say and i'm reading this from my sub stack at this point on paper.

None of this could actually be recorded as a dismissal or a termination at all because i wasn't dismissed. I was removed as an advisee, which advisors are within their right to do, even if it's not the nice thing or the ethical thing to do.

And my funding wasn't cut off. I had simply reached the end of my funding period and i wasn't told to leave, but i was sent a link to withdraw.

With no alternatives suggested or help offered to continue, and i was doing a lot of work to see what i could do to continue in the meantime.

I'm obviously paraphrasing, the, severely paraphrasing. So all of this was technically accurate, and. It was very carefully constructed such that the word dismissal was never used, so that the policy that govern an actual official dismissal for my program, and the protections that a dismissed student is entitled to, and were never actually formally invoked.

There are situations under which a student can be dismissed, if you fail a qualifying exam, if you're on probation, if you use ai undisclosed, or if you play dress, you know, things like that.

And i didn't, my record was perfect, and there was no reason. And so i submitted that grievance because of everything i just said and less than 48 hours later before my grievance could be officially processed.

My department launched an honor code violation case against me. And i'm not gonna, i'm trying, you know, to be precise is what i say.

I'm not gonna make guesses or whatever on things that i'm not sure about, but i think we all know how that sounds actually per my collective bargaining conflict that did constitute retaliation.

Yeah. So on september 5th, i think maybe september 7th, i had a full hearing and i presented my side of my evidence and i wanted to add on that everybody i talked to said that this shouldn't even be a case that it's going to be a landslide that i will.

Win the case and it's ridiculous. It even has to be done. I also think it's important for me to add on, you know, why did I not continue with a different advisor?

And it's because I was guaranteed sixth year funding from my original advisor for my following year. So I had missed most of the deadlines to get funding, and even then, funding for science is so scarce right now.

I would have had to find a new advisor, and the one person I could find wasn't even confident that I would be able to graduate within the next year.

And so all these factors compounding just... Made it not worth it to stay since then i haven't heard anything from my university at all.

They've completely ghosted me. I tried to withdraw. They have a section that says, what lab are you and what library was drawing from?

And i said na because i was removed from my lab and they emailed me and they said, we can't withdraw you without a lab and i said, well, the reason i'm withdrawing is because i was kicked out of my lab and they said, well, i guess you're just stuck here as a student, whatever.

I forfeited a job. I had lined up my degree, just my whole life. I lost everything. I lost my my income, my insurance over something that was categorically not true and no evidence was presented and i don't really know why i'm saying this.

I don't really know what to do. I've tried to talk to employment lawyers and stuff but a lot of them only work with discrimination cases.

And, it's not necessarily discrimination based on a protected class or like if i've been fired wrongfully terminated but i'm stuck, i'm stuck and i have to emphasize that the burden of proof even though i didn't do anything, the burden of proof this whole time for the past six freaking months has all been on me.

I'm exhausted and i'm so like strong out about all of it and i'm just so over it. I've had to rebuild my whole life. I don't really know.

I'm saying this. I just can't let i guess. I know the people who did this are just going to school and living their lives like they did nothing wrong and i just can't sit with that.

So i'm being obnoxious about it because i don't really know what else i have. I'm just trying everything that i can. To share this because it's wrong, it's wrong and i'm not the first one or the last one.

I'm sure of it. So, i don't know. Share it. Tell people talk to people. I don't know. I don't even care. Don't share it.

Whatever. It's just. I don't know anyway.
