Google 的 Project Suncatcher 计划把 AI 芯片送上太空

Google wants to send AI chips to space and the reason actually makes a lot of sense. 🚀 Project Suncatcher is exploring whether Google’s AI chips could run on satellites powered by near constant sunlight. In the right orbit, Google estimates solar panels could be up to 8x more productive than on Earth. The idea is to connect satellites using beams of light so the chips can work together almost like a data center in orbit. There are still huge challenges to solve, from radiation and heat to communication and cost, so Google is starting with two prototype satellites with Planet, targeted for launch in early 2027. If it works, some of the infrastructure powering AI could eventually move off Earth. Pretty wild.

Google wants to run ai chips in space, where solar panels could get sunlight almost all day. I mean, think about it. Think about a panel on your roof.

Every evening, earth turns it away from the sun. Clouds can reduce its output during the day. There's so many factors. Google is exploring an orbit near the boundary between day and night.

In that orbit, satellites could stay in sunlight almost continuously. The company estimates a solar panel there could be up to 8 times more productive than on earth, and that matters when you're trying to power computers that run around the clock.

Now, the project is called sun catcher, which is very fitting. Satellites would carry google's ai chips and exchange data through beams of light, allowing them to work together.

They still need to handle radiation, get rid of heat, and communicate reliably. Launching all of that equipment also has to make sense financially.

So google is starting small, so it's announced plan is to launch two prototype satellites with planet by early 2027. And those two satellites will test whether the chips and their connections actually work together in orbit.

It's pretty incredible though. I mean, i think whether it's chips data centers, we are looking for other places outside of earth for these things for various reasons.
