SubCom 如何制造并铺设承载全球 99% 国际数据流量的海底互联网光缆
Thousands of miles of cable coiled inside a ship help connect the world. SubCom, America’s only company that both manufactures and installs undersea internet cables, builds these systems in New Hampshire. Inside the cable, hair-thin glass fibers carry data as pulses of light, while electrically powered repeaters strengthen signals across oceans. And these cables are designed to operate for roughly 25 years. According to the International Telecommunication Union, submarine cables carry more than 99% of international data traffic. Even as AI and cloud computing expand, our digital world still depends on carefully engineered physical infrastructure stretched across the bottom of the ocean.

There are thousands of miles of cable sitting here coiled inside this ship. They're made by subcom, america's only company that both manufactures and installs undersea internet cables.
Each cable contains glass fibers as thin as human hair, transmitting information as pulses of light. And what's pretty crazy is that cables like this carry more than 99 percent of international data traffic according to the international telecommunication union.
But getting light across an ocean takes more than a long strand of glass. And that's because the signal actually weakens as it travels.
So devices called repeaters amplify it along the route, powered by electricity flowing through copper conductors. And near the shore, additional steel armor helps protect against fishing equipment and ship anchors.
Basically, workers test the cable underwater, then carefully coil thousands of miles into specialized ships for installation.
And what's really cool is these systems are designed to operate for roughly 25 years. And now subcom is expanding its factory toward producing nearly 48,000 miles annually, which for context is almost enough to circle the earth twice.
It's crazy to think that as ai and cloud computing. Drive demand for more connections. The internet still depends on glass being laid across the ocean floor.
