Researchers have built a battery designed to work inside your stomach, then break it down so your body can absorb it. So this is pretty incredible.

The engineering challenge, while there's many here, is getting those two things to happen in the right order. So it needs to survive long enough to power a medical device in an environment that's literally built to break things down.

So the mit team used magnesium and different trioxides as electrodes, with a gel electrolyte that lets ions move between them.

They did a bunch of technical stuff here. In a stomach like acid solution, the batteries work for about 3 days, and broke down completely.

Within weeks, and the team went beyond testing the battery alone. For example, in animals, it powered a device that electrically stimulated the stomach, increasing a hormone involved in hunger.

I mean, think about it, that could eventually help treat severe appetite loss. This is still preclinical, and the stimulation device's circuit board wasn't absorbable, so there's that to take into account, but the battery was.

And that is the part that you should really hold on to. Designing medical electronics means thinking about what happens after they finish their job.

Here, the power source is designed to disappear. This could really revolutionize how we think and utilize medical devices.
