Physicists just run a quantum computation by braiding particles around each other like hair, and that is actually how they're solving things.

Ok, so every quantum computer today stores information inside individual qubits, and qubits, as many of us know, are incredibly absurdly delicate.

I mean literally a vibration that's not meant to happen can disrupt them. So this though is a different bent. Basically, it's don't store the information in the parts, store the information in the pattern itself.

The particles are called non-abelian anyons, and they only exist in two dimensions. In our world, swap two identical particles, swap them back, and nothing happened.

The universe can't tell. In 2d, these things remember. Move one around, and the other system permanently records that it happened, in the order it happened.

So you braid them, the crossings are the information. You you know how braid works. And a nudge doesn't untie the knot. You'd have to pull the entire thing apart on purpose.

So, the catch is that braiding alone can't produce every operation a computer need. So, the team needed to add a second move.

They let two anions collide and measure what comes out of it. Basically, a braid plus a fuse, and that was enough to solidify it.

It's pretty incredible. Harvard, uchicago, and stony brook ran it on a 54 qubit trapped ion machine. And they published their findings in nature back in july.

So, nobody has these particles sitting in a material yet. These were made up inside the processor. Every other quantum computer is built to catch mistakes after they land.

this is built so there's nothing for the mistake to even grab. share this with someone who loves tech and quantum computing.
